Driftwood Willy is a young whale in search of friends and adventure. He springs from the imagination of his creator, Duane Wurst. Mr. Wurst is an artist and author of many books. This picture book is the first in a series. Watch as Willy leaves home in search of friends. He meets a series of characters who help him and in the process teaches the reader the meaning of hope and joy.
It started when my niece Cathy asked me to paint a picture on some driftwood she found. Cathy never had an original piece of my work. Sad, isn’t it. I bargained for a price and agreed to paint the Charity Island Light House on one side. The board looked like a cut of log. Looked handmade. but real. It was unusual.. There were faces coming out on the back side, and a whale’s face on the other. OH MY GOD…. did someone do that. How neat. Another artist at work, creating beautiful things.
I called Cathy and asked, “Did someone already do artwork on this driftwood?”
“No, Uncle Duane, It’s just a piece of driftwood.”
Just another piece of driftwood. Huh. I don’t think so. Arrangements were made, the deal struck. It’s her driftwood, my painting, but everyone needs to know the story of the whale that was in that little piece of driftwood.
“Cathy, you should start investing in my artwork, and… oh… the story is all mine.”
